Photo Friday, Week 47: Gathering

November 26, 2011 by Trina 4 Comments

Sorry about the delay. I didn’t intend to turn Photo Friday into Photo Saturday.

As I mentioned yesterday, I failed to get a good gathering photo at my Mawmaw’s on Thanksgiving Day. Which is unfortunate because we had a gorgeous day with great natural light. So I had to get my photo from our gathering at Jonathan’s parent’s house, which was at night, and no natural light.

This is where I struggle with my photography {not that I’m a “photographer” or anything}. I feel I get the best photos during the day and I have a really hard time using my camera’s settings to get a great photo at night, indoors. In these situations I mostly stick with the “no flash” setting on the camera because it seems whenever I try using manual settings the photo comes out way too warm {and yes, I adjust the WB settings}.

In order to get rid of the “golden” hue in this photo, I edited in Picnik and the bottom line is I’m really not thrilled with it at all. It would have been a much better one taken outside during the day, but Photo Friday for me is about learning what works and what doesn’t and finding what I still need to work on. Clearly I need more work on taking indoor photos at night.

Do you have any suggestions for me?  {And just for the record, I know that lamp in the background is a no-no.  I didn’t set the photo up. I was merely taking advantage of them all being in the same spot at the same time.}

What is your biggest photography struggle?

My wonderful in-laws, GG and Nana, with their grandkids and great grands.

  1. I still struggle with taking photos indoors. One thing to try is increasing your ISO so you need less light. Also an external flash is helpful so you can bounce the flash. You can also buy diffusers for the pop up flashes that help also.

  2. Whole lot of prettiness right there! I think it is hard to get much more than a utilitarian shot of a group at a gathering…for me anyway.

  3. You should get a Light Scoop! They are cheap and amazing – they bounce the flash off the ceiling for shots where the light is too low for your camera, but the flash is too harsh. I love mine.

  4. Awwww….Sweet ! I’d say that’s a treasured photo for many generations to come…beautiful family !
