I finally got around to taking photos of the tic-tac-toe game I made for the kids. It turned out really cute and the kids love it. I let them pick which colors they each wanted and then I picked the board color to compliment their choices.
This photo made me laugh because Xander has sock fuzz in between his toes.
I got the idea here. I decided I wanted a hard surface for the board so I cut a piece of cardboard to size and covered one side of it with a piece of brown felt. I secured the overlap on the opposite side of the cardboard with hot glue. Then I cut the piece I stitched the board onto and hot glued it on top of the unfinished side of the cardboard piece {where the overlapped flaps were glued} to make everything nice and finished looking. Hope all that makes sense, I failed to take photos of this step.
We keep this in a plastic zip baggie and as you can see from the last photo, the felt sticks to itself pretty well so it’s great for travel. I’m sure we’ll be taking it on the road with us to Disneyworld.
Now if I could just find a way to keep them from arguing over who gets to go first…..
If you want to make this yourself, it’s super easy. Even if you aren’t familiar with embroidery {I’m NOT!} it’s really simple.
Materials needed:
- 1 felt sheet for game board {2 if you decide you want to cover cardboard as I did}
- 1 felt sheet for X
- 1 felt sheet for O {Let your kids pick the colors! They will love having the input.}
- 2 skeins embroidery floss. {I used DMC brand.}
- Embroidery needle
I used the template I printed out as a guide. Simply lay the paper on top of the felt and stitch thru both. Tear the paper away carefully when you’re done with each piece.
For the board I wanted a thicker line so I used all 6 strands of the floss and a stem stitch. For the X’s and O’s I used a backstitch, which is a little bit faster I think, but results in a thinner line.
As you can see I opted to not stitch on the faces. I couldn’t quite get the French knots just right so I decided it was fine without them
Although the faces are super cute… Also you may notice I used a stem stitch on this O. I decided to go with the backstitch after seeing how thick the line was on these smaller pieces, as I mentioned above. {Looking back at Wild Olive, I can see now that she did use a backstitch on her game pieces too.}
If you have any questions about this project or if something isn’t clear let me know. I want to thank Wild Olive for the idea and template!
